Standing In The Gap

The Call to Intercession
Daniel 9:3

And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

Standing In The Gap: A Call To Intercession

The Burden
Ezekiel 22:30

And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land,

The World:

There is a drastic need in our day for the Lord to intervene in the affairs of men. The world as we know it is spiraling out of control. Economic failure, Global Warming, World Military Instability, The Threat of Nuclear War, Spiraling Crime Rates. The list goes on and on. This is not pessimism, but mere reality.

There are those who would scoff at the thought that man is incapable of fixing the issues he faces. Those who say man can work it out. I ask humbly, how can man work it out, if the heart of man is the root cause. The economic failures were caused by men. The wars that loom over us, are as a result of men thirsty for power or mad with various ideologies. Global warming is as a result of man’s abuse of the planet we live in and it’s resources. So I submit that the solution cannot originate with the cause.

The Church

In addition to this, we are saddened when we take a look at those who are supposed to be the people of God. We see many of God’s people pursuing the things that the world pursues. We see a breakdown of the family among the people of God at a rate which matches that of those who do not name the name of Christ. We see materialism and lukewarmness as the norm rather than the exception. Even this was spoken of by our Lord Jesus in the book of Revelation 3:16 as that which could not be stomached by Him.

We see the church setting it’s standards to be on par with that of the world. Men seeking earthly ambitions and qualifications and setting their minds on things on the earth that the Lord Himself said would soon pass away. Churches split down the lines of Race, Wealth and Politics. Churches and Christian lives devoid of the power of God, and leaning on their own understandings and methods to accomplish their own purposes. Of course there will be those who would disagree with this, but to disagree would necessitate turning a blind eye to what Scripture teaches.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

This very famous verse and many others like it in Scripture proclaim the undeniable truth, that when a land is sick and in peril, the people who are responsible for it’s condition, are the people of God. It is we who have the burden of seeking God in repentance and supplication, that He might turn towards us in forgiveness and hear from heaven.

We are in need of a divine intervention.

The Burden

There are instances in the bible when God raised up ordinary individuals and placed them in particular situations where they had to stand in the gap before Him on behalf of His people and their land. When God’s people turned away from Him, and lost their way, He would raise up individual men and women to call upon His name and plead before Him on behalf of the people.

Moses stood in the gap between God and the people and caused God to spare His people after they had sinned the great sin. Isaiah when ministering to a rebellious nation, prayed in Isaiah 64:1:

Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down,

He literally is asking God to step into the affairs of men. Many interpret this as Isaiah asking God to send revival. God told Ezekiel that He was looking for a man, an individual to stand in the gap so that He might be merciful to His people. Daniel prayed to God for the restoration of His people to their land. On and on we could go.

I believe in these last days it is no different. In these troubled times, God is looking to and fro throughout the whole earth for individuals who will stand in the gap for the land. Not individuals with talents. Not individuals with resources. Not a group of individuals to hold discussions. Or teams of people with programs. But men and women who would empty themselves and go before God in repentance on behalf of the people and say “Spare thy people oh God.” This is the burden of the man or woman who would stand in the gap.
