8. Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:

Introduction:

Have you ever come to the point in your Christian walk, where you have to conclude "The Christian Life is not what I thought it would be?" Or have you been faced with such a trial or difficulty that caused you to feel as though God has abandoned you, or that He is not aware, and if He is aware, He is not concerned about your welfare? I am sorry that the questions sound so cliche. They sound like questions that the common televangelist would ask, so that he can get someone to think he's talking to them. In reality though, these questions describe in vivid detail the experience of many a child of God whom the Lord has laid His hand upon.
[jwplayer config="Post Player" mediaid="1656"]

Recently I came across a brother in the Lord who was gravely perplexed at to his spiritual condition. He expressed openly his frustration and disappointment in seeking after God and coming up short. It was as though, he said, God had hidden his face from me, and no matter what I did, how much I prayed, how much I begged, how much I repented, how much I pleaded, Christ remained hidden. He would not speak, He would not bless, He would not move on my behalf. In hearing the cries of our brother, my wife and I were greatly moved. Not because we had compassion on our brother going through this difficult time, though indeed we did, but because we identified with him. You see we have felt ourselves in the very same situation. Not a long time ago, but very recently and to the present. Coincidentally the Lord had recently laid a passage of scripture on my heart, that sincerely speaks to the heart of what we and my brother in the Lord are going through. We to because of some difficult times we are facing, have been ofttimes discouraged and we have come to the point of feeling abandoned by our Lord. Our circumstances cause us to doubt the mind and heart of God, and more than that, cause us to be unable to find God during the darkest part of our lives.

Job is a very familiar character in the scriptures. He is well known both by the religious and secular worlds. He was a faithful child of God, whom the Lord allowed the devil to sift as wheat. Few children of God, have suffered the things that Job have suffered. Few have undergone the trials of body and spirit that Job experienced. The bible says Job was a righteous man. Faithful to God. Who prayed daily for his family. Who reverenced God, and hated evil. This was not Job's testimony of himself, but God's testimony of Job. The apostle Paul often used a phrase, "God is my witness". That is to say, he would call upon God to testify that what he was saying was true. So in the account of Job, it was God's testimony of Job that said he was a righteous man. There could be no higher, truer, unfailing and trustworthy testimony.

In Job 23, we find job at the point of having lost his house, his children, his substance and his health, he is surrounded by his "Friends", who have taken the time to reason with Job and to show him that the reason he was suffering these things was because he had sin in his life. God was judging Job, they said, because of his pride and some hidden iniquity that he had not confessed. Their accusations could be summed up in the words of one of Job's friends Eliphaz when he said:

Job 22:23-25

If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent, and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines, then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you.

Put away the sin from your tent, repent Job. Stop trusting in gold and silver, then the Lord will be your gold and silver. We find later that Job's friends were rebuked by God,</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Absolute Surrender: The Story of Jacob’s/My Life Part 3
Genesis 32:26

And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

Introduction:

In Luke 18 we have the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. In that account we have our Lord Jesus Christ Himself painting a picture for us of a wicked man, and a righteous man. If we are honest with ourselves, the Pharisee's description of himself in that account, on the surface reads like the description we would give to a righteous man today. He was not an extortioner, unjust, or an adulterer. He was of a better reputation than the corrupt tax collector. He fasted, not once a month, but twice every week. He also gave tithes of all that he possessed. Now wouldn't the average modern day church love to have this man as a member of their congregation? I believe he would be perfect for the position of elder or deacon. Especially where the tithing part is concerned. The man is of impeccable standing and character. But those of us who have read this account, understand that, as is said in Luke 18:9, that Christ "spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:" This Pharisee, Christ said, did not go down to his house justified. It is important to see that Christ did not deny anything claimed by the Pharisee, but we understand that all that the Pharisee had going for him, even at it's best, was still not good enough to make him righteous before God. This man was actually the wicked one.

[jwplayer config="Post Player" mediaid="1622"]

The other man spoken of in the parable, was the Publican or Tax Collector. He, unlike the Pharisee, would not be as welcomed into our modern day churches. This man recognizing that he had no good thing within himself that he could bring before God. Recognizing that he was not worthy to even stand before God. Did not draw near to God, but stood afar off. He dared not, could not, lift up his head so heavy was it with shame. He beat upon his chest in anguish over his condition, and the helplessness of it. All he could do, his only option, his only recourse, his only hope, was to fall upon and appeal to the Mercy of God. The acknowledgement of his condition and his recognition of the only solution are contained in the words "God be merciful to me a sinner" Luke 18:13. This man, Christ said, was the righteous man and went down to his house justified, rather than the Pharisee.

Background

We have been following Jacob's life from the time he fled from the face of his brother Esau, who had purposed to kill him because Jacob had stolen Esau's blessing. We watched as he went into a far country and was miraculously and providentially kept by God. We saw how God orchestrated His perfect will, even in the midst of Jacob's less than ideal circumstances. We saw that the Jacob's sons that were born in a troubled household, would eventually be the twelve tribes of Israel. We saw how God increased Jacob's wealth even though Jacob was trusting in his own tricks and gimmicks, and not in the God who had appeared onto him. Now we have come to the place where God instructs Jacob that it is time to go back to his own land and his own people. This though, is no small issue. For going back to his father's house, would mean going back to face the reason for him fleeing his father's house in the first place. Esau his brother.

After Jacob's confrontation with Laban in the previous chapter, we are told Jacob went on his way and the Angels of God met him. Almost twenty years before when Jacob left his father's house, we would remember that he also had a vision of God's host and the ladder that ascended to heaven. This second vision I believe served as evidence to Jacob, that the Lord's host was with him all along, and that it was God who was behind his preservation. The name he gave to the place was Mahanaim - The two hosts. This means God has his host,</itunes:summary>

Genesis 29:35

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” So she named him Judah.

Introduction:

It is a great mystery, but a truth none the less, the doctrine of the providential working of God in the lives of His children. We believe and the bible teaches, summed up in Roman 8:28, that God causes all things to work together for the good of them that love God, and those who are the called according to His purpose. Because of our own self righteous attitude, we would at times want to interpret that verse to mean all things except personal failures, shortcomings and weaknesses. We declare in our own understanding that God can work providentially over here where if there are any negatives, they are all external. But over here, where the negatives are internal or personal, God's providence is not active. Might I suggest that the "all" in Roman's 8:28 means just that "all". God is in full control of all things, and is not limited but more than able to work His purposes in all the circumstances of His child. Including the failings, shortcomings and weaknesses of His child.

To every person who has come to know God and has drifted away from Him. And you feel as though God has left you to your own devices. Or that He has written you off. Or that all the things that you have experienced, or done, or been thought during your time in the wilderness are all stacked up against your account. Or for those of us who has had many, many wasted years, who think that God does not desire, nor is able to once again use you. This message is for you.

Background:

Last time we looked at Jacob, that trickster, he was fleeing his homeland because he had stolen the birthright of his brother Esau, and his brother was seeking to kill him. We saw that despite this, God met Jacob at Bethel, and promised him that He would be with him, protect him, provide for him, and bring him again to his father's house. God promised to fulfill the promise He had made to Abraham, Jacob's grandfather, and to Isaac Jacob's father, to Jacob. If you haven't already, you can read about Jacob's encounter with God at bethel in the post Absolute Surrender: The Story of Jacob’s/My Life Part 1.

Our account is taken from Genesis 29-31, so we will be looking across these three chapters. We see Jacob journeying from Bethel and coming to a place called Harran. Jacob was fortunate enough to find Rachel, the daughter of His uncle Laban, and thus found Laban his uncle and ended up working for him in the land of Harran. Now as the story goes, Jacob who was the trickster or supplanter, had met his match in this man called Laban. We are told that Jacob fell in love with Laban's daughter Rachel. He loved her so much, that he bartered with Laban to work for him for seven years if Laban would give him Rachel as his wife. The bible says that the seven years seemed unto him but a few days (Genesis 29:20) because of the love he had for Rachel. Well as it turned out, Laban tricked Jacob and gave him his older daughter Leah, and Jacob did not realize until the morning after the honeymoon. Laban's reason was that he could not give the younger daughter, Rachel, to marry, before he had given the older daughter, Leah. Jacob was no doubt furious, but because of the love he had for Rachel, he worked seven more years for Laban so he could have her as his wife. So Laban gave Rachel to Jacob and he worked for him seven more years.

Jacob then negotiated with Laban for his wages for working for him for a another number of years. His negotiation was, that while Jacob tended Laban's flock, any of the flock that were born speckled would belong to Jacob. Jacob devised and elaborate plan, to ensure that when the strong cattle conceived, they would be born speckled. We'll look at this more later on. All in all,</itunes:summary>
